Advanced to a runoff for Texas Senate District 15 in the 2024 Democratic primary election.

Johnson is also running in a special election scheduled for May 4, 2024, to serve the remainder of the unexpired term of former Sen. John Whitmire (D), who held this seat for 40 years until his resignation in late 2023.

Endorsed in the 2024 Democratic primary election by the Houston Chronicle editorial board.

As a House candidate, Johnson also was endorsed by the Houston Chronicle editorial board in the 2020 general election, in the 2020 Democratic primary election, and in the 2018 primary election.

In his 2018 House race, he was recommended favorably by Texans for Public Education, a grassroots educators' group that researched and rated candidates in the 2018 election based on their stances toward public schools.
