Endorsed in the 2022 general election and Republican primary election by the Texas Home School Coalition, which supports using public funds for private and home-schools, giving private and home-schooled students greater access to public education services, and limiting state oversight of private and home schools. Mayes also received the group's endorsement as a House candidate in the 2020 and 2018 elections.

Middleton has signed the American Federation for Children's "Education Freedom Pledge" vowing to support "the right of parents to voice their opinions at school board meetings and to take their children's taxpayer-funded education dollars to the education providers of their choosing - whether it be a public, private, charter, or home school.” The group was founded by former U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos to promote school choice legislation and fund candidates around the country who support private school vouchers.

Endorsed in the 2018 primary election by Texans for Fiscal Responsibility (Empower Texans), a group that has supported budget cuts and limiting state spending on public education, reducing educators' rights and benefits, and funding private school vouchers.
