Paxton won a May 24 runoff in the 2022 Republican primary for Attorney General.

First elected as Texas Attorney General in November 2014. He previously served as a Texas State Senator from 2013-2015. Paxton is married to Texas State Sen. Angela Paxton (R-McKinney).

Endorsed in the 2022 general election and Republican primary runoff election by the Texas Home School Coalition, which supports using public funds for private and home-schools, giving private and home-schooled students greater access to public education services, and limiting state oversight of private and home schools.

In the 2022 general election, Paxton's opponent, Rochelle Garza, has been endorsed by the editorial boards of the Houston Chronicle, the San Antonio Express-News, the Austin American-Statesman, the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram, and the Dallas Morning News.
